Victorian-era hotel still welcomes guests

How would you attract visitors coming from the North to Americus, Georgia, in the late 19th century? Build an elaborate 100-room hotel with towers, balconies and a three-story atrium and they will come.

The Windsor Hotel opened in 1892 and attracted overnight visitors and local guests for balls and other grand celebrations until it closed in the 1970s.

It reopened in 1991 and again in 2010 after an extensive renovation as the Best Western Plus Windsor Hotel. Former President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, cut the ribbon for the hotel, which has 53 rooms including the Carter Presidential Suite.
