It’s Girl Scout Cookie season! Every year around 200 million cookies are sold, representing around $800 million in revenue.
Juliette Gordon Low founded the Girl Scouts in Savannah, Georgia, in 1912. Five years later, the first Girl Scout cookies were baked by the girls in the Mistletoe Troop in Muskogee, Oklahoma,. They sold them in the high school cafeteria as a service project.
The idea spread and Girl Scouts around the country made sugar cookies, wrapped them in wax paper and sold them door to door.
In 1933 the Greater Philadelphia Council was the first troop to sell commercially baked cookies.
