For the devoted legions of graduates of the University of Georgia, it will come as no surprise that Athens was named the coolest college town in the U.S. by the BBC.

Alex Crevar, an alum who moved back to the city, found Athens a more mature place and noted its space for creativity and social activism as well as a thriving gourmet food scene.

Things to do include visiting the Georgia Museum of Art, the State Botanical Garden of Georgia and music venues such as the Georgia Theatre, where you can also enjoy a drink on the rooftop bar.
