What began as a two-week celebration in Munich, Germany continues in Helen, Georgia today. The festivities originally began in honor of the royal wedding of King Ludwig I and Princess Therese in 1810 with amusement rides, games, horse racing, food and beer.
In 1969, the town of Helen needed a refresh and was transformed into a small German town. The first Oktoberfest in Helen was held in 1970 and continues today.
From Sept. 5-Oct. 27, the town honors the celebration with activities including the Oktoberfest Parade, live music, food favorites (such as wursts, kraut and sides) and lots of beer!
