Shuck yeah! Restaurants recycle oyster shells to help save coastal areas

by The 100 Companies

Eat some oysters in restaurants in Atlanta, Athens, Augusta and Savannah and you may be helping to build green infrastructure projects along the Georgia coast.

Participating restaurants partner with Shell to Shore, an Athens-based nonprofit that collects their shells and cures them on a farm in Athens for six months to kill off any biological matter and then hauls them to the coast. They are used to build living shorelines and oyster reefs that help with erosion and coastal flooding.

A fundraiser, Shellfest 2024, will be held in Athens on Sunday, April 21 with live music and oysters, of course.
