Rise of Atlanta’s film empire

by katem

Built on a historic 330-acre Army base in Atlanta, Tyler Perry Studios opened its doors in 2019. Few could’ve imagined a Black-owned film studio of this scale thriving in the South. One of the largest in the U.S., it boasts 12 soundstages named after Black entertainment pioneers like Sidney Poitier and Oprah Winfrey.

Perry’s journey – from living in his car while staging plays to becoming a billionaire mogul – mirrors the resilience of Black storytellers throughout history. Perry’s studio is a beacon for Black creatives. By controlling his studio, Perry ensures diverse stories are told without industry gatekeepers in the way.
