Before the Super Bowl was must-see TV

by The 100 Companies

On Jan. 15, 1967, the first Super Bowl – then called the AFL–NFL World Championship Game – was played in Los Angeles, launching America’s biggest sports tradition.

The NFL’s Green Bay Packers faced the AFL’s Kansas City Chiefs at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Green Bay, coached by Vince Lombardi, won 35–10, cementing the NFL’s dominance before the leagues merged. About 62,000 fans attended, leaving thousands of empty seats, while 51 million watched from home. The halftime show featured marching bands, pigeons and balloon releases.

What began as a modest championship quickly evolved into the most-watched annual event in American sports culture.
