History of the kazoo and more at new exhibit in Macon

Legend has it the kazoo was invented in the 1840s in Macon by Alabama Vest, a freed slave who introduced the instrument at the Georgia State Fair as the “Down South Submarine.”

The Tubman Museum – one of the largest museums in the Southeast dedicated to educating people about the art, history and culture of African Americans – opened a new exhibit on National Kazoo Day (Jan. 28) that features the history of the kazoo.

The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and is located at 310 Cherry St. in Macon. Adult tickets are $10; discounts available.
