In 1848, Ellen Craft, a mixed-race enslaved woman from Clinton, Georgia, executed one of the most ingenious escapes from slavery.
Disguised as a white male planter, Ellen posed as a wealthy slave owner with her husband, William Craft, posing as her servant. This daring ruse allowed them to travel from Georgia to the North, where they eventually gained freedom.
Their bravery made the couple abolitionist heroes, and their story inspired many. Ellen and William Craft later became vocal advocates for emancipation and women’s rights, using their escape to highlight the horrors of slavery and the strength of the human spirit.
