According to the CDC’s case count map, Georgia now has 330 confirmed monkeypox cases. While most have been among gay or bisexual men in metro Atlanta, the virus can spread to anyone after direct contact. This week the Georgia Department of Health confirmed the first Georgia woman diagnosed with monkeypox

DPH is distributing a limited supply of vaccines while the federal government ramps up production. The World Health Organization also warns cases in children, pregnant women and the immunocompromised are expected as the outbreak grows.

The illness may last two to four weeks. While rarely fatal, the symptoms are painful.
