On June 24, Roe v. Wade, which has protected abortion rights for nearly half a century, was overturned, leaving many citizens angry and wondering, what’s next?
With the federal law gone, states are able to pass their own abortion laws. In Georgia:
• Abortions currently remain legal.
• Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr has filed a request that the Heartbeat Bill, previously signed by Gov. Brian Kemp, but blocked by lower courts, be allowed to take effect.
• Atlanta City Council passed a resolution instructing police to treat abortion-related violations as lowest priority.
• Several Georgia district attorneys announced they won’t prosecute abortion-related cases.
