From Hickory House to Atlanta Fish Market

by The 100 Companies

In 1990, legendary restaurateur Pano Karatassos asked me to find property along Buckhead’s Peachtree Road for a new seafood restaurant. I had a different idea.

The Hickory House BBQ restaurant on Pharr Road had ended its lease. It wasn’t Peachtree, but close to it and offered nearly two acres of parking. I argued that Pharr would become a major thoroughfare and his Atlanta Fish Market could be a magnet for development.

Little did I know that Pano had an even more creative idea than merely serving wonderful seafood. Today his 65-foot-long fish sculpture serves as a landmark for the neighborhood.
